Without you I'll be miserable at best. Oliver smiled down at the cellular device in his hands, shaking his head and laughing a little bit. His best friend Jordan was summoning him to join him in the school’s gymnasium and he would go easily, that was no big deal. He didn’t have much to do anyways, as it was that he had already stayed after school for an hour to grade papers and plan everything for the next week. He looked at his watch and walked down the halls with his hands in his pockets, really wishing that the gymnasium wasn’t so far away from his little hole of a classroom. He wasn’t one much for going out and socializing with the other teachers, even if he really didn’t mind it at all and wouldn’t run from a good conversation. During the school day he was a hermit though, and that was just how it was with him. It could be his work ethic striving to achieve, or maybe he was just so lost in his vision of perfection that he didn’t allow room for the socialization. It was like the end of the day was the end of a movie and suddenly the rest of the world was relevant.
The last week had been chaotic for Oliver; it was hard to say really what his stand was on what had happened. He was seeing a student, and not in the way that he thought. They officially broke it off just a couple of days ago but he didn’t want to dwell on it, it was something that he really wanted to forget happened at all. He bowed his head as he walked and tried to place his mind in the present, and who he was about to be blessed with seeing. He grinned as he approached the double doors and walked in, happily striding next to his best friend of nearly… what, twenty years? He put an arm on his shoulder casually and stood next to him, watching as the rest of the basketball team scurried into the locker room, pumped up for their big game the next day. “Looks like a successful practice. But how did it really go?” He asked with a smirk, looking now at Jordan instead of the boys. He laughed a little after asking, knowing that sometimes the boys in basketball butted heads with each other, making team work hard and the result of a practice was normally not as truthful when it came to how the thing in its entirety was.

another practice gone awry, did any of these boys get a long? It was sort of irritating sometimes, but Jordan dealt with it, and it usually worked when he threatened to bench them. He had such a collection of personalities on his team, so he didn’t even question why certain players clashed so much. Luckily, he was pretty intimidating and fairly good with words, so they trusted him and stopped arguing when he came into the picture. He looked at his watch, seeing that practice was over, ’thank god’, he thought. He told the boys to gather up everything and that they were free to go, he pulled out his cell phone and texted Oliver. Jordan needed a breather and when he thought of someone that could calm him and distract him from his stress; it was always his best friend, Oliver.
It was almost seconds before Oliver had arrived, damn, the boy was like the flash. Jordan rolled his eyes at his own thought, he had a tendency of comparing things and people to super heroes. The team was just making their way into the locker room when Jordan felt Oliver’s skinny arm go around his shoulder. Jordan shook his head, ”remind me again why I took the job as basketball coach?” he rose a brow and laughed at himself. ”these kids man”, he scratched his head and looked over at Oliver, that face always made him feel better. He didn’t know why, but it did. Oliver was just so pure and calming, maybe it was the way he carried himself, so different than the other teachers. ”I don’t even wanna go there though, how was your day?”, he asked. ”I knew you’d still be here. Did you move into the school?”, he joked, ”might as well,” he added, laughing. ”hey, you doing anything tonight?”, he asked.

Without you I'll be miserable at best. “It’s because you’re black, duh, Jordan.” Oliver taunted with a grin, laughing as he did so. He had very little stereotypical beliefs but it was a long-running joke between the two, and if anyone knew that he meant nothing harmful by it, it was Jordan. He gave him a light squeeze and stepped back, laughing a little bit as he covered his mouth. He watched as the last boy ran into the locker room, scrambling to get into the showers. He was never really one to play sports, but he did understand them fully enough to get why people played them. “I understand, I know these kids can really tick you off.” Oliver told him as he patted his shoulder, not wanting to push the subject any further. He knew Jordan didn’t completely hate the position, otherwise, why would he stay with it? He, the science teacher with no athletic capability, could admit that seeing those boys take the win was one of the best feelings in the world. As far as accuracy went, the team somehow managed to be near perfect despite their differences. They had maybe one or two loses in the past month, and it was sad to see them lose, but they would pull it together the very next game. He shrugged his shoulders at the question, not really having much to say about the day he’d had. “It was good, kind of boring, but thanks for asking. I hope yours wasn’t as bad as the practice, hm?” He asked, laughing a little at the end of the sentence. He really did hope it wasn’t a bad day that his best friend had. “Hey,” Oliver retorted, shoving him slightly, but a smile remaining on the lanky man’s face. His shove was hardly even a nudge from a kitten, but it wasn’t intended to be much either. He knew it was the truth, he practically lived in his little office, not to mention his classroom. Between the two rooms, you could bet he was doing something in one of them. “You know I have a dog to feed, can’t do that.” He joked, shaking his head at the thought. He was a little surprised to hear the next part, but he just shook his head and said, “No, just you know… finishing the moving process into my office.” His tone was sarcastic and he had a grin on his face.

Jordan laughed immediately, ”right, right… I keep forgetting”, he shook his head, ”you’d think this coaching basketball thing would be in my blood”, he joked. He brought his clipboard up and looked at it, a play he had been trying to teach the players just moments before drawn out on the image of the court. He’d have to tweak it a bit, but right now, he just wanted to go home. He put the clipboard back down, letting it hang loose at his side. ”it was alright, had to break up two fights… one, was two girls fighting over a cheating boy… “ he shook his head at the drama he had to listen to earlier that day, ”you’d think the girls would kick the boys ass instead of each other’s, right?”. Jordan rolled his eyes, ”teenagers”, he muttered. Jordan was the school’s head security, he made sure no one was ditching, doing anything illegal in school, and he often broke up the fights.
He felt a tiny shove and laughed, ”woah, you been working out? I think you might have left a bruise”, he joked, touching the area oliver shoved gently. His laughed lingered a bit before he spoke again, amused by the words coming out of his friend’s mouth. ”come over, I feel like cooking tonight… plus, we need to get some meat on those bones boy,”, he reached over and patted oliver on the stomach, joking of course, but serious about the invitation. ”whadaya say?” he asked.

Without you I'll be miserable at best. “Actually, Jordan, it’s very believable that the girl would go after the other because humans are much like animals in the sense that they cannot control their urge of finding revenge, and instead of acting on the betrayal, their first instinct is to rid the second party and then find their way back to the source of it all. It’s a pretty simple cycle, when you think about it.” Oliver stated in a matter of fact kind of way, having no sort of intent of outwitting him, it was just simply the first thing that flowed through his non-stop running mind. His eyes followed him for a second after and hardly caught on to the fact of what he had done, and why it wasn’t particularly something people normally said in the situation at hand. He didn’t have to worry too much about his tantrums though when it came to Jordan, because he knew it all. Well, they were all different; he just knew how to deal with them and just to let him talk, whereas most people will be sorry for asking. Oliver would find himself feeling self-conscious occasionally about it, especially when people made a point of being annoyed by it. Oliver couldn’t help but laugh at the statement, looking down at his skinny limbs as he said so. “I’m not all bone! See, I have…” he paused and put one of his arms up, flexing what little was there, “…well, it’s something!” He defended himself, his voice going a little higher and he looked at him once more, nodding and brushing his hair behind his ear. “Yeah, I would love to, just let me go change real quick, alright? I’ll be right back,” He said before turning on his heel, hoping the boys weren’t still in there. He went to the teacher’s section of the changing area and got into some more comfortable clean clothes, putting his work ones back in the bag before heading back out. On his way out one of the basketball players ran into him and apologized, running away as fast as he could afterwards. After regaining his balance he hurried back out to Jordan’s side and was wearing an auburn colored button-up tee shirt, accompanied by some jeans that fit him pretty well. “Ready to go?” he asked with a grin.

Jordan watched oliver as he spoke so quickly and intelligently, not really surprised by it. he had known oliver almost his entire life, so we was more than used to his ongoing answers and/or replies. most people found it a little weird when oliver went off on his little insight bits, but to Jordan, it always amused him and sometimes he even learned a thing or two. ”heh, I guess you’re right”, he said laughing a little, even though he was a little bit confused at what his friend had just said. Oliver always over analyzed a situation and he didn’t hesitate to give his own input on topics. But he knew that it never bothered, Jordan, sometimes if Jordan was in the mood, he even encouraged him to keep going, just listening on all he had to say. Oliver was an interesting guy to him, which was another reason why he was appointed jordan’s best frend. If you saw the two, you really wouldn’t expect them to be so close, but their personalities actually went well with one another’s.
Jordan laughed at the view before him, poking the little muscle oliver flexed. ”woah, free gun show… “ he joked, laughing some more, just out of good fun though. Jordan smiled, glad that oliver had accepted his invitation, it felt like forever since the two had hung out and to be honest, Jordan missed him. he probably wouldn’t admit something like that out loud, guys didn’t do that, right? ”alright, sounds good”, he said following not too far behind oliver, but changing direction when he got to his office, putting his whistle and clipboard on his desk. He sighed as he looked at the play again, still not comprehending why the team wouldn’t just follow along with the play. He grabbed his wallet and keys and headed back to the court.
Before he walked through the heavy doors he called out, ”I want everyone out in 5! So speed it up fellas”, he walked through the doors and waited for oliver to come back out. When he saw the familiar face, followed by several of the players, Jordan straightened up. ”yep..let’s roll” he said as the two exited the gymnasium and went out to the parking lot. He felt ten times better now that he was outside and out of the school, like a load of weight had just been lifted off of his shoulders. The sky was pink, purple, and orange… it looked so pretty at this time of day. The cold air hit his face and he closed his eyes for a second, just to intake the softness of the breeze. ”feels so good to be out finally” he said in a soft tone as they got to his vehicle, he unlocked the doors with a push of a button on his keys. ”hop on in,” he smiled and got into the driver’s seat, starting the car.
