ADAM FYNN TAYLOR
seventeen, junior, straight, athletic, arrogant, matt lanter
So I was born into a family where honor and pride were everything. My mother met my father when he was sent home from the gulf. He was a soldier in the US army, and my mother was a nurse; working at a base for wounded soldiers. He’d been shot three times and was lucky to be alive. The story goes, that my mother nursed him back to health and they fell in love. A year or two later I was born. My parents were always described as madly in love when I was a child, but I guess like most couples circumstances made it difficult to stay that way.
After the September 11th attacks, my father was part of the operation which was sent to defend our country. He’s been away ever since doing tours of Iraq and Afghanistan. So I grew up mainly with my mother. She continued to work at the hospital, and I could tell that she missed him. My father would come home now and again, for a few months at a time, and he would tell me stories about his heroic missions, and of all of the people he’d saved. He inspired me to be the best, and I did everything I could to make him proud. I was determined to be the best football player on the team, get the best grades I could- not that I was that smart, but I tried. I became arrogant and cocky, and I began to develop very strong views about homosexuals. I wanted to become a soldier; I knew it would make him proud.
When I started high school, my arrogant nature only became worse. I was popular with the girls, and managed to land a girl in the year above me; someone I'm actually still screwing. I was an athlete and my strength and speed only grew. Unlike most of my friends, I avoided alcohol, and didn’t touch drugs. I didn’t want anything that would stop me from being the best. Only in my mission to be the best I also became a total ass. Some people call me cold; so I switch off from my emotions and I don’t exactly give out a lot of sympathy but I’m just preparing myself for the army.
Two years ago, my father retired from duty after losing his leg from a land mine explosion. He’s not the same man as he used to be, he’s bitter and cold, and he drinks more than he ever did, but he still loves my mother. He distanced himself from me, which only fueled my desire to be accepted by him. I wanted to make him proud; I figured the only way to do it was to join the army and make damn sure I came back alive. So that was my plan, I just have to get through the next two years of school, and I’m saying goodbye to Velocity and hello to the rest of my life.
