The door opened with a ding as Ariel Lore walked into the bookstore. The smell of old books filled her nose and she breathed in deeply, feeling the scent relax her. She'd always loved books and could spend all day in a library or bookstore, and as much as she loved new books, nothing beat used ones in Ariel's mind. It let her know that someone else had enjoyed the book and it was almost like they were giving it to her. She didn't tell anyone that for fear they'd think her weird. She was glad to finally get out of the house and away from her family- if she could even call them that anymore. She knew her relationship with her dad was quickly becoming strained, and that wasn't something she liked to think about.
She saw the woman behind the counter peer at her over her glasses and Ariel almost laughed out loud. She was used to being looked at strangely from her elders, especially when she wore her dark brown cowgirl boots that almost didn't go with the rest of her outfit. Back in Nashville, she'd get weird looks because sometimes she didn't dress "country" like the rest of her small town. She'd been told by many that she looked like she belonged in California, but she didn't want to be there. Not yet, at least. She had been happy in Tennessee, but that had been ripped away from her and now she was stuck in this town. Her mind was still back in Tennessee, and she liked to pretend that she was still back home or that she was just on a vacation.
Hoping to escape reality for awhile, Ariel walked down the aisles and picked out six books to look through. She ordered a cup of hot tea at the small cafe before sitting down at a window table. She began reading a 1937 copy of Hans Christian Anderson's "The Little Mermaid". The other five books consisted of information on writing, composing, famous violinists, acting, and "Black Beauty".

The park had been so peaceful and had quickly grown to be by far his favorite place here in Velocity since he got here. He hadn’t been here long, in fact it had been coming around to be a month and had to admit, he loved the place so far. School wasn’t starting for another two months, so he still had time to get to the know the new place he had just moved to. He hadn’t been able to check out as much as he wanted to, but he wasn’t complaining, he had been spending most of his time here with his next door neighbor, who was definitely his favorite person in Velocity right now. Today though, Lucas had decided to explore a bit on his own, and he started his day with the park, even if he had already been there plenty of times. He just found it to be the perfect place for him to get some writing done, he had been here almost a month and his new notebook was already halfway full. Where all the muse and inspiration was coming from, he wasn’t sure, but he loved it.
He reread the last line of the poem he had just finished writing and grinned, happy with the outcome of all the scribbles and scratched out words on the page. He could never write a poem/entry quickly, each took time, sometimes days even. He was a perfectionist when it came to his writing too, so that made him work even more on each work of art. He closed his notebook and sighed as he looked up and around at his surroundings, he loved how green and healthy the park looked. After a few moments to himself, he finally decided to pack up his things and head into town, to explore the town some more. There were plenty of things he still hadn’t been able to see and he had promised himself before he left the house that he would see or do at least two new things today.
He didn’t know a lot of people, in fact, he could probably count on one hand how many people he knew in this town, so who knew, he might just meet someone new today? He threw his backpack over his shoulder as he walked along the pathway which led into town. His eyes wondered along all of the store names as he passed through fellow pedestrians, his eyes finally landed on something that immediately caught his eye. A used book store, Luke hadn’t been in one of those or any book store in awhile, and he used to practically live in them. He loved the aroma of used books and the variety that the stores provided; it was like being in reading heaven. Not a lot of people got that feeling sure, but he did.
He walked through the aisles, which he almost grabbed a book in each, he could never truly contain himself in stores like these. He always wanted to read and purchase everything. He held on to two books, one a book of edgar allan poe poems which he had been dying to finish, but his dad threw away his copy before he was able to. And the other being the complete Grimm Fairy Tales books, he knew it was kind of girly or gay to be reading about fairy tales, but it wasn’t like he was with anyone, so why not just read them now that he was alone. He made his way to the café area and ordered himself a hot chocolate, taking it and placing it on an empty table, along with the books and placing his backpack on the floor near his feet. He took a sip of the hot chocolate, but before he could pick which book to dig into first, the book at the next table caught his eye. There was a small girl in at the window table reading an old Little Mermaid book which caught his interest, ”Excuse me, is that anything like the Disney movie? Or is it a little different?” he asked in a polite tone.

Being deeply involved in the story, Ariel jumped slightly when she heard a voice near her. She looked around and saw that there was only one person in the cafe and he was talking to her.
She heard his question and almost raised her eyebrow and gave him a sarcastic comment, but she saw that he was genuinely curious. She smiled slightly and shook her head.
"It's really different, actually," she said to him. She wondered if she would bore the young man by telling him all about it, so she decided to just give him a brief summary. "When the little mermaid -who doesn't have a name, unlike in the movie- becomes human her feet bleed. I could tell you more but you could just read it." Her smile turned into a playful smirk. "It's a great read. I'm Ariel, by the way. I just moved here."
She held her hand out for him to shake. He was extremely handsome and didn't look too older than her. Oh, but she wasn't thinking of dating him- they'd just met.
"I'm actually surprised to see someone close to my age in a bookstore. Unless you're thirty and just look young for your age."
She got the feeling that the man was genuinely kind and so she felt she could be more outgoing than usual. It was better than being shy and not talking at all.
