He sat alone, cradling the bottle of coca cola. It was a brave move for Dainton, but one that he was convinced would go down well. There was nothing worse than living with regret and he knew that every moment he spent sober in the bar, the more chance he had of actually maintaining it. It was hard work sitting alone in the bar, watching other people drink and get drunk, and the more he thought about it, the more stupid he’d been coming alone, where temptation was at it’s highest. But still at least he would be able to resist. At least he hoped.
The stale smell of alcohol and cigarettes tainted the atmosphere. It was his favourite bar, and despite being under age, he looked old enough, and he carried with him a fake ID. Everyone knew him, and so when he arrived, having been off the scene for a while, he was greeted by a gaggle of regulars, each wanting to buy him a beer or share a shot and get wasted with him. It wasn’t going to happen. Dainton wasn’t up for that sort of temptation. He’d been good up till that moment. And even though he knew it would be a difficult evening, he was almost enjoying the normality of the social aspect of it. Despite the fact that he’d been extremely anxious when he’d first arrived.
He glanced around, somewhat surprised that some of his regular friends weren’t around; Cora for one, also used the place as a regular haunt. But he hadn’t seen her since her od. Something he’d heard about through a friend. He knew she was okay, because he’d sent her a few texts, and he’d shared his experience with her. They’d always been a funny pair; the type to get wasted together, and flirt but it had never really amounted to more than that. Which was strange really, because as a sober version of himself, he could see that they had heaps in common, and he was quite attracted to her. But he’d sworn off sex as well as alcohol and drugs, since he was convinced that girls held the key to his depression. Whether it was true or not it had seemed like a good move. And so he barely noticed her as she entered the bar.
