As the final bell rang, Elena jumped out of her seat and joined her classmates in hurrying to the door. School was over for the day, and the sixteen year old wanted to get to her locker and out of the building before a certain person was able to find her. The hallways were crowded as usual with students moving from one destination to another, but it didn’t bother her much since everyone was moving pretty quickly. The busses were waiting outside, but since Elena had her own car she didn’t really have to rush. However, she was doing what she’d been doing all week and rushing to get out of the school anyway, knowing that she would be found at some point if she didn’t since her locker was right on the way to Jason’s. Things between the two of them had been weird since she realized that her period was late, and while she’d gone to get a test from the drugstore, she was still too afraid to take it. That was more or less why she was avoiding him and it had worked for the last week, but he would probably catch onto it eventually and confront her about it. Unfortunately, that wasn’t a conversation that she was ready to have with him just yet, so she was trying to keep her distance and stop herself from seeing him.
As she moved through the hallways, narrowly avoiding a collision with a group of freshman huddled together and walking slower than turtles, Elena sighed. All she’d been thinking about lately was her fling with Jason and how she was helping him hurt Hayleigh, someone who had been a friend of hers until this whole thing had started. Now, to make matters even worse there was a possibility that she was pregnant with Jason’s baby, and that wasn’t good for any of them. She had no idea why she’d gotten herself into such a tangled mess, but there was really no turning back now and as much as she wanted to be, she really wasn’t sorry for any of it. Jason, after all, was a great guy despite the whole cheating thing, and Elena couldn’t help but start something with him. Unfortunately, she felt like karma was coming back to bite her now that a pregnancy had become a possibility. She really hoped that she wasn’t because it would add a lot of complications to both their lives, but there was just as much of a chance that she was and that thought terrified her. Her fear, shock and confusion were enough for her to want to stay away from him for a bit, at least until she’d taken the test and figured out what she was going to do.
With those thoughts in her head, Elena finally arrived at her locker and hurriedly spun the lock. When she managed to get it open, she wrenched it open and shoved her unneeded books back onto the shelf before pulling out the ones she needed to bring home and stuffing them into her over-sized hang bag. Others around her were stopping to chat with friends on the way to their lockers and she normally would have been one of them, but she was determined to get out of there before Jason passed. He would be soon enough since his last class wasn’t far from his locker and Elena’s was en route, so she didn’t have much time. After finally gathering everything together, she slammed her locker shut and hurried towards the exit and parking lot, hoping she would be able to get out without being spotted by him.

It had been quite the day for Jason, multiple pop quizzes in which he had no answers too. His mind wasn’t in school right now, it was elsewhere. He had grown accustomed to a life he had started a few months ago: cozy and in love with his girlfriend, baseball, video games, popularity, parties, and when he wanted to gets some, he’d give elena a call. He and Elena would text almost everyday, flirty messages and what not, but the past few days had made him feel un at ease. Her replies were short, no winky or smiley faces, and no flirting. What the hell had gotten into her? Did he do something wrong? She had seemed okay with the fact of being the other girl to him, hell, she had seemed more than willing to be, what was going on now though? Since she wasn’t answering his calls and was sending him questionable text replies, he knew he’d have to eventually find her and see her in person. He couldn’t do it in school, could he? No, Hayleigh was always around, and he didn’t want to give her any sense of suspicion.
Lucky for him, today Hayleigh had theater practice, so he was free to find Elena. It felt like she had been avoiding him all day, whenever he spotted her, she’d turn her head or turn into the other direction. Something was up and Jason needed to find out what it was. The hallways were busy, mainly because everyone was trying to get to the buses and out of school. He had to push through many people, his binder in his hand and at his side as he did so. He saw her, but it was hard to get to her, and if he yelled her name out he’d only bring attention to himself. He finally broke free, but she had already slammed her locker shut and was heading to the exit. The girl was really quick and he had a feeling he knew why, she was still trying to avoid him. He rushed towards and reached her before she stepped outside, grabbing her hand and pulling her towards him, as other students passed.
He looked at the students passing, trying not to make a scene and not be too loud. ”Elena, what the hell?”, he tried to keep his voice low, ”what’s up with you?” he accused looking at her suspiciously. ”you’ve been acting weird all week and we haven’t…. you know, in a while” he said, biting his lip a little. ”Are you mad at me?”, he asked, his eyes still looking around, making sure no one was paying attention to them.

Elena couldn’t be gladder that the day was over. Going home meant a less likely chance of running into Jason, though he could fully show up at her house if he wanted to. After thinking about that, she decided she wouldn’t go straight there so that she could avoid him further, especially knowing that he was getting annoyed and suspicious. She’d been doing a good job of pushing him away, ignoring his texts and only giving short replies to the ones she did respond to, and left out any signs of flirting. This was unusual for them, since they flirted through text all the time, and she knew that stopping that would be enough to set him off. She’d been willing to be his other girl and choice only when Hayleigh wouldn’t put out for him, but now that there was the possibility of being pregnant, she didn’t want that anymore. She’d realized after missing her period that she deserved a lot better than second best, and she would tell him that eventually. At the moment, however, she wasn’t ready to have that conversation just yet. Plus, she was pretty sure he’d never leave Hayleigh, even if Elena was pregnant. That was why she was slowly distancing herself from him and preparing herself for a life that didn’t include him anymore.
He’d probably caught on to the fact that she’d been avoiding him all day by now, and if he hadn’t then he was completely clueless. Every time they’d seen each other, Elena would turn away quickly or do something that made it impossible for him to approach her. Luckily, with such busy hallways now he wouldn’t take the chance of approaching her or trying to catch her because it would risk Hayleigh seeing them, so she was free to make an escape. Going on that knowledge, she probably didn’t need to rush as much as she was, but she didn’t want to take any chances of the hallways emptying out and leaving her alone with Jason. So far, her escape plan had worked pretty well and she was proud of herself. Unfortunately, her rapid pace was interrupted by someone bumping into her and sending the contents of her bag to the floor. Hurriedly, she bent to gather her things up as she heard someone call out a greeting to Jason, and started to move again once she had. Thankfully, the school’s exit and parking lot wasn’t too far away from her now and she practically ran the last few steps, pushing past people to reach it before Jason noticed her.
Unfortunately, she hadn’t moved quickly enough and before she knew it, she felt him grab her hand and pull her towards him just before she could step out the door. Sighing, she turned towards him and waited for him to speak, completely aware of other students passing them. She wondered why he was taking a risk confronting her at school, then remembered that Hayleigh had theatre practise and wouldn’t be around to see them. “Nothing’s up,” |
she answered simply, aware that her voice had shaken a little. “No, I’m not mad. I’ve just been…busy,” she said, knowing that wouldn’t be enough to appease him but figuring she’d try anyway. “Look, I have to go. I don’t want anyone seeing us and getting suspicious,” she added, trying to pull away from him. Sure, Jason still had to worry about Hayleigh’s friends or gossip freaks spotting the two, but he wasn’t doing anything questionable, was he? He was just talking to a fellow student, who just so happened to be a pretty girl. He just had to make it look like the conversation wasn’t anything serious, make it look as casual as he could, but it was hard because Elena wasn’t exactly making it easy for him. He waited for her explanation and as she went on, the more unconvincing she sounded. She was definitely acting different and it was really starting to bother him. ”busy?, he frowned, not believing her, he wasn’t letting her go though. ”busy with what?... someone else?” he asked, his voice a little shaky. There was no way to foresee this, he was starting to think she found someone else. He was stupid to think he could hold onto her on the side forever. He wanted to plead his case, but no, he couldn’t not here, not at school. ”it’s that dude from your science class, isn’t it?” he said feeling himself get a tad bit jealous.
”let me come over… “, he whispered so that no one can hear the words coming out of his mouth, ”I want to talk”, he said, his eyes still shifting every which way. His eyes finally met hers, ”please… I won’t stay long…I”, he stopped himself and rubbed the back of his neck, waiting for the next group of students to exit the premises. Most of the students were out of the hallways, but there was still some throughout the hallways. ”I miss you, okay?” he admitted in a low voice, he really did miss her, for once he wasn’t lying to her. He looked her in the eyes to show her that he really wanted to talk to her, it had felt like days since the two had met up and damn, the boy had needs.

Elena was feeling slightly uncomfortable with this situation, though she would never actually admit it. They weren’t doing anything but talking, but it still felt strange to her to be doing it in the middle of the hallway. The two of them never really talked much at school so nobody would be suspicious or try to turn it into something, so her discomfort and hesitation shouldn’t have been much of a surprise. Jason didn’t seem to have a problem with this conversation, and was doing a good job of making it seem like nothing out of the ordinary. She was well aware that she wasn’t sounding very convincing, and sighed inwardly. She could tell that her uneasiness was bothering him, and that he wasn’t accepting the explanation she’d just given him. She saw him frown, a clear indication that he didn’t believe her and she sighed again and looked up at him. She could hear the shakiness in his voice as he asked if she was busy with someone else, and didn’t know what to say. “No, it’s nothing like that. It’s just…” |
She paused, trying to find the right words. “Well anyway, it’s not that. But I don’t think it would matter even if it was,” she responded. He probably wouldn’t like that response, but she didn’t care. She stared at him as he asked her to let him come over, not sure what to say. Most of the time when he said he wanted to talk, he meant something completely different, and she wasn’t really in the mood to satisfy his needs at the moment. Best case scenario, he would go to her house, they would have their fun, and then he would walk out the door to go and find Hayleigh after they’d sworn to secrecy like always. It was the typical routine, and there was hardly ever a time when they’d be alone together and just talk. He was the kind of guy that needed sex like he needed air, and she wasn’t willing to give it to him right now. There was a time when she didn’t mind being the girl on the side who only got attention when he wanted something, but she was getting tired of being that girl. “I really don’t think that’s a good idea, Jay,” she said with a shake of her head, bringing up the nickname she called him all the time. She saw him look around again, and she did the same, making sure her voice was quiet when she spoke. What came out of his mouth next was something she wasn’t expecting to hear, but she didn’t really believe them. “It’s not me you miss and you know it,” she accused, trying yet again to escape from his hold on her. “Just go find Hayleigh, okay? I really have to go.” Her response wasn’t going to go over well and she would probably cave and let him come over eventually, but if he did she was going to promise herself not to give into him. It was hard to do sometimes but she was strong and she’d be able to handle it. Or, at least, that’s what she was going to tell herself. Jason might have seemed like he only wanted sex from her, mainly because overall, that’s exactly all he wanted. But that didn’t mean he didn’t pay attention to the way she was, reading certain expressions for what they actually meant. It was actually bugging him more than he expected thinking that she was into someone else or that if she was mad at him for some weird reason. It was funny how he never really thought about his girlfriend when he was around Elena, she had this odd power to her that made him push Hayleigh to the back of his mind whenever they were together doing… you know, other stuff. He was relieved to hear that there wasn’t another boy in her life, but was instantly offended at her next words, his jaw dropped a little but he recovered quickly. ”wouldn’t matter? You don’t know that” he said not wanting to admit that it actually would matter if it was what was going on with her. This wasn’t meant to be anything more than a thing on the side for him and the two seemed cool with it in the beginning, but as the weeks went by and they got a little more constant with their hook ups, it was starting to fade away again and Jason didn’t know why.
Jason was getting a little irritated, why wouldn’t she just let him come over and talk about this. ”why don’t you believe me? i wouldn’t be trying to get you to talk to me if I didn’t… look, I promise I won’t… try anything. Just talk”, he said practically pleading. He knew it’d be tough for him not to want to get it on, but he really wanted to know what was wrong with her. It’d probably be a little weird too, considering they never really did much talking. ”just talk”, he repeated, hoping she’d just let him. He looked at her, honesty in his eyes.

Elena was having an internal battle with herself, and it really wasn’t pleasant. She had been trying so hard all week to avoid Jason and having to tell him what was going on, and she’d been doing a good job of it. He’d known better than to try and confront her until now, and she was having a hard time telling him he couldn’t come over now that he had. She sighed, not really sure how to take his response to her previous comment. It was understandable for her not to think it mattered when all he ever seemed to want from her was sex because his goody-two shoes girlfriend wouldn’t give it to him. Elena still wondered why he bothered to stay with Hayleigh when she wasn’t making him completely happy, but she knew better than to bring it up to him since he’d probably get defensive. She knew deep in her heart that he really loved Hayleigh, but that didn’t stop her from wanting him. In the beginning, she’d accepted being his girl on the side that only got his attention when he wanted some action because she’d wanted him so badly and still did, but now that this whole pregnancy possibility was thrown into the mix, she didn’t want to be his second choice anymore. “I do, actually. It’s obvious it doesn’t,” |
she countered, putting a hand on her hip in annoyance. She could tell he was getting irritated and even more confused, but she didn’t care. If she really was pregnant, then it would change her whole life forever and he could just walk away and keep living his without any difference. In fact, she was pretty sure he’d probably walk away and just find another girl to satisfy his needs. Jason was a good guy, but she doubted he would take the news of being a father in nine months very well if that was going to be the case; most guys didn’t unless they were extremely noble. Jason obviously wasn’t one of those guys, or at least not to Elena’s knowledge. For all she knew, he could surprise her if her test came out positive and stand by her side, and she would try and use that as an excuse to make him leave Hayleigh, but there was every possibility that it wouldn’t work. That thought, along with thoughts of having to raise a child alone at sixteen were terrifying to her, and she wanted to slowly ween herself off of his company to get herself prepared for a future that was most likely coming her way and didn’t included him. Elena regarded him for a moment, trying to decide if she truly believed him or not. “Oh come on, we both know you’ll say and do anything to get what you want.” It was true, and they both knew it. He could deny it all he wanted, but she knew what was going on inside his head. He repeated the his words, and she sighed and looked around for a moment before looking back at him. “You’re not going to let go until I agree to this, are you?” she said irritably, not really wanting to hear the answer she knew was coming. Jason rolled his eyes at her words, she made it seem like she meant nothing to him. ”did you not just see me get mad at just thinking it?”, he asked defensively, he just started to notice that this was kind of their first fight, and what bugged him about it was that he had no idea what the cause of it was. ”you know what, think whatever you want” he said shaking his head, not wanting to push it anymore, ”I just wanna know what’s up with you”, he said seriously. Why was she being like this? To be honest, he never saw this side of her, and it was actually getting to him how much he actually cared. The hallways grew less crowded, thank god, Jason thought, only seeing band geeks walking together towards their own practice.
Jason turned his attention back to Elena, he could tell she was trying really hard to keep her composure, did she really not want to see him? Her words were 100% true and he knew it, ”yeah, I know. But this time I mean it… we can even stand outside your house if you really don’t trust me” he said really trying to convince her to just allow them to talk more privately. This was the most interaction they really ever had at school and he had to end it before anyone got suspicious. He smiled a little and shook his head, ”nope, so can I?” he said waiting for that magical answer.

As the conversation continued, Elena felt more and more uncomfortable. She didn’t like how it was going, nor did she like that she was slowly losing her will to stay away from him for a bit. It had worked for the entire week, and now it was slowly coming to an end and she was annoyed. She’d been doing such a good job of dodging him and now he’d gone and ruined all of that. She didn’t really know what to say, but she knew he wanted some answers. She wanted to give them to him, but wasn’t sure she could right now. It was still kind of a new and shocking thing, and she didn’t want to throw it all at him too until she knew for sure what was going on. The only problem was that she was afraid to take the test since she had a feeling that it would come out positive. She had, after all, missed her period which was how she’d started to think pregnancy was possible in the first place. “You know what, I’m just not going to say what I was going to say because it’s only going to get you more mad,” |
she said, noticing that they were in the beginning of their first ever fight. “I know. I wish I could tell you but it’s…it’s just not the right time,” she responded with a sigh. The hallways were getting less crowded now, which sent a wave of relief over Elena. It was easier to talk to him without swarms of people walking around and seeing them or overhearing their conversation. The last thing she needed was for this to end up on the gossip column for the entire school to see. Of course, they would see eventually if it turned out to be true and she started to show, but she preferred not to think about that just yet. She watched him turn his focus from the band kids that were walking by back to her, and she knew he could see she was losing her composure. She hated the effect he had on her, where he could be so charming and a smooth talker even if it was just to get what he wanted from her. She could tell he was trying desperately to convince her that he wanted to talk to her more privately, and when he confirmed her suspicion about not letting her go until she agreed to it she sighed heavily. She looked around again before answering, not wanting any chance of them being seen. “Fine. One hour, Jason. I mean it,” she said, hoisting her bag higher onto her shoulder. “After that, you’re coming back here to find Hayleigh and I’m going to deal with what I have to deal with on my own.” [/div] notes, (: word count, 473 thanks brooklyn from caution

Jason slowly released his grip on her, not wanting her to feel trapped even though he really wanted her to just agree already. It was never this difficult to get her to let him come over, something was up and he wanted to know what it was already. His expression formed into a confused one, even though he was relieved she wasn’t looking to get him more upset. ”not the right time?” he asked repeating her words, she was only causing the boy more confusion, it didn’t help that he wasn’t the brightest crayon in the box either. He didn’t question her any further because by the time he was, she had finally agreed to him coming over and talking. ”one hour”, he repeated with a nod to show his understanding.
He didn’t really like it when she brought up Hayleigh, in fact, he hated it. He didn’t like saying his girlfriend’s name or thinking about her while he was cheating on her, it only made the guilt more intense for him. ”fine, fine… “ he said, biting his lip a little, he had to come pick up Hayleigh after her theater practice anyways, so it was actually working out well. He didn’t pay much mind to the fact that she had to deal with something; he wasn’t really good at picking up on too much. Plus, the relief that she finally agreed was overpowering any concerns he had right now. ”alright, I’ll meet you there in a few minutes, kay?” he said before walking away from her. He’d have to meet her there, there was no way he was going to be seen walking with her to her house.
